- What are Alleles?
- Alleles are alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same location on a chromosome.
In other words, alleles are different versions of the same gene that can produce different traits or phenotypes.
For example, there are two alleles for the gene that controls eye color in humans, one for blue eyes and one for brown eyes.
An individual may inherit two copies of the same allele (homozygous) or two different alleles (heterozygous) from their parents.
The combination of alleles that an individual carries determines their genetic makeup or genotype.
