  • What are Amino Acids?
    • ==Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, which are essential macromolecules found in all living organisms.
      Amino acids are organic compounds that contain both an amino group (-NH2) and a carboxyl group (-COOH) attached to a central carbon atom (-C-)==.

    • There are 20 different amino acids that are commonly found in proteins.
      These amino acids can be classified as either essential or non-essential.
      • Essential amino acids are those that the body cannot produce on its own and must be obtained from the diet.
      • While non-essential amino acids can be synthesized by the body.
    • Amino acids play a crucial role in protein synthesis, as they are joined together in a specific sequence to form polypeptide chains.
      This process is catalyzed by enzymes called ribosomes, which read the genetic code in DNA and translate it into the sequence of amino acids that make up a protein.
    • In addition to their role in protein synthesis, amino acids also have a variety of other functions in the body.
      For example, they can be used as a source of energy, or they can be converted into other important molecules such as neurotransmitters or nucleotides.

POLAR AMINO ACIDS: le side chain contengono ossigeno e/o nitrogeno, e formano facilmente un legame con l’acqua CHARGED AMINO ACIDS: hanno un pH negativo o positivo. #IMPORTANTE Un PEPTIDE ù l’unione di pochi amminoacidi, che formano dei legami peptidici, perdendo una molecola d’acqua: #IMPORTANTE Quando diversi peptidi si uniscono formano un POLIPEPTIDE o proteina.
